Visitor Information

Kamin Science Center, formerly Carnegie Science Center, offers endless fun for all ages! With five floors of interactive exhibits, Buhl Planetarium, Rangos Giant Cinema, and USS Requin (SS 481) submarine, there’s always something exciting to explore.

Whether you’re a toddler who loves to explore in the Little Learner Clubhouse, powered by PNC Grow Up Great® or an adult who loves astronomy, we have experiences to suit every age and interest. The Science Center is conveniently located on Pittsburgh’s North Shore between Acrisure Stadium and Rivers Casino, just minutes from downtown.

We’re easily accessible for both drivers and cyclists, thanks to our location along the Three Rivers Heritage Trail, as well as for visitors using public transportation, thanks to the Allegheny T Station. About Our Facilities

Open food or drink containers are not permitted in our exhibit areas. Our buildings are gum-free facilities.

Photography is permitted. Tag us in your photos to be featured on our social media channels! 

A limited number of lockers are available on the 1st Floor of the main building on a first-come, first-served basis. Lockers are 50 cents each.

Accessible restrooms are available on every floor, and private gender-neutral restrooms are found in SpacePlace and adjacent to the RiverView Café.

Kamin Science Center values inclusivity and strives to ensure employees and visitors feel accepted, respected, and welcomed in its museums and workplaces, including restroom facilities.

Our facilities offer a range of restroom options to ensure that everyone has access to a space that meets their needs. Male, female, and all gender restrooms are available throughout the museum. Restroom access is at the discretion of the individual to determine the most appropriate and safest option for them.

Accessible restrooms are available on every floor. Some may need or desire additional privacy and, regardless of the underlying reason, may access private all-gender restrooms available in RiverView Café, PointView Hall (during facility rentals), and the Rangos Giant Cinema exit.

Restroom facilities are designated by posted signage throughout the Science Center. Please refer to visitor museum maps or consult security and/or visitor services staff for specific restroom locations.

Kamin Science Center values inclusivity and ensures all employees and visitors feel accepted and respected, including in restroom facilities.

All individuals can use restrooms corresponding to their gender identity.

There are diaper-changing stations in many of our restrooms, as well as the lactation room on the Fourth Floor. Additionally, there is an adult changing table in the all-gender restroom on the First Floor.

Diaper-changing stations are in many restrooms, including single-user and family-care stations. An adult changing table available at the private gender-neutral restrooms are found in SpacePlace.

Attending with Children

  • Hands-on exhibits are geared toward kids of all ages. 
  • Children under age 13 must be accompanied by an adult.
  • Diaper-changing stations are located in many of our restrooms, including the single-user restrooms with family-care stations.
  • Strollers are welcome and are available to rent at the Ticket Counter. 
  • Several of our theaters and USS Requin cannot accommodate strollers inside. Ask a staff member for stroller parking options.
  • Caregivers may nurse in any visitor spaces regardless of the use of a privacy drape/cover. For caregivers looking for privacy, a nursing/family care room is available in the Little Learner Clubhouse on the 4th Floor.

Safety

For the safety and comfort of all of our visitors and the preservation of our exhibits, there are a few restrictions. 

Firearms and weapons of any kind are not permitted in our buildings or on campus.

Our buildings and entire campus are smoke- and tobacco-free (including smokeless tobacco, e-cigarettes, and vaping devices). 

Our security team reserves the right to inspect bags, boxes, or packages.

Museum Hours and Closures

  • Open 10 a.m.–5 p.m. six days a week. 
  • Closed Tuesdays.
  • General Admission tickets are sold for timed entry every 30 minutes.

Because of heavy traffic and traffic restrictions on the North Side, Kamin Science Center is typically closed during Steelers home games or other major events at Acrisure Stadium.

  • Advanced online ticket purchase is strongly encouraged.
  • Tickets are sold up to four weeks in advance. 
  • Tickets are sold for timed entry.
  • If a General Admission time slot is sold out, a limited number of tickets may be available for on-site purchase at the Ticket Counter on a first-come, first-served basis. 

USS Requin (SS 481) Submarine Hours

  • Open 10:20 a.m.–4:20 p.m. when weather and river conditions are favorable. Closed Tuesdays.
  • Self-guided tours are included with General Admission on a first-come, first-served basis. A timed ticket is required and can be obtained on the day of your visit at USS Requin Gateway, located on the Ground Floor. 
  • Tours operate every 20 minutes, and full mobility is required for this experience.
  • USS Requin closes annually, from January through mid-March, for maintenance and cleaning. Submarine hours also vary depending on the time of year. 

Rangos Giant Cinema Hours

Rangos Giant Cinema is open Thursday through Sunday, with showtimes between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. (excluding special features and events). View the current films and showtimes.

Kamin Science Center Parking Info

  • On-site parking is available for $6 per vehicle for Kamin Science Center visitors only.
  • Visitor rates do not apply when parking for a special event or commuting.
  • Pull a ticket when entering the lot and pay as you leave or use a kiosk inside the Kamin Science Center lobby.
  • The first 45 minutes are free in the Main Lot to accommodate drop-offs and XPLOR Store shoppers. 
  • If the Main Lot is full, additional Science Center parking is available across the street in the North Lot at the same price as the Main Lot. There is a crosswalk from the North Lot to the Main Lot for your convenience.
  • Special parking rates apply during Steelers games, Pirates games, Pitt Panthers games, concerts, and other events on the North Shore.

To pay inside:

1. Bring your ticket with you to pay inside at the end of your visit.

2. Use a pay station located in the lobby to pay for your parking. 

3. You will use the same ticket when you exit the lot.

4. When reaching an exit gate kiosk, scan your ticket again and the gate will open.

To pay at the gate:

1. At the end of your visit, drive toward the exit gate and scan your ticket at the kiosk.

2. Follow prompts to pay with your credit card, and the gate will open.

Public Transportation 

From downtown Pittsburgh, take the free subway (called T-Plus) to Allegheny Station, located two blocks away from the Science Center. The Red, Blue, and Silver Lines serve Allegheny Station. Many Pittsburgh Regional Transit bus lines serve downtown Pittsburgh. From North Side locations, take a 14 or 18 bus to Allegheny Station. Cyclists and Walkers

Stop and stay awhile! We are located between Acrisure Stadium and Rivers Casino on the North Shore section of the Three Rivers Heritage Trail (east of the West End Bridge and west of the Fort Duquesne Bridge). Whether walking or traveling by bike on the riverside trail, enter at the Ground Floor to enjoy a quick bite at the RiverView Café (no admission ticket needed).

For General Admission, visitors should proceed to the Science Center’s main entrance on the opposite side of the building.

Accessibility

Carnegie Museums, including Kamin Science Center, welcomes all visitors.

We work to assist visitors with disabilities in obtaining reasonable and appropriate accommodations, and in supporting equal access to our websites, services, programs, and activities. 

Requests for accommodations should be made at least two weeks prior to your visit.

Wheelchair icon

Wheelchairs for Visitors with Limited Mobility

Nonmotorized wheelchairs and portable stools are available to use at no cost on a first-come, first-served basis. 

Motorized wheelchairs are available on a first-come, first-served basis for $25 per day, no reservations necessary. 

See a staff member at the 1st Floor Ticket Counter for availability. 

Photo ID is required.

Below-deck visits on USS Requin (SS 481) submarine require full mobility. For visitors who are unable to access USS Requin tours, USS Requin Gateway offers a virtual tour on the TV monitor at the bottom of the stairs in the PPG SCIENCE PAVILION® (opposite the Rangos lobby), next to the scuba suit. 

Accessing the Building

Accessible parking spaces are located in the rear of the building. 

Once parked, you will see a large blue sign on the side of the main building directing you to the accessible entrance on the ground level of the main building, directly under the main building portico entrance. 

To request special disability accommodations, please contact the museum at least two weeks in advance of visiting or participating in special tours, classes/camps, and other activities.

Getting to USS Requin (SS 481) Submarine

Timed tickets can be obtained on the day of your visit at USS Requin Gateway (located on the Ground Floor) by showing your General Admission wristband. 

Full mobility is required for this experience. 

For visitors who are unable to access USS Requin tours, USS Requin Gateway offers a virtual tour on the TV monitor at the bottom of the stairs in the PPG SCIENCE PAVILION® (opposite the Rangos lobby), next to the scuba suit. 

Increasing Access to Admission

A personal care attendant (PCA) accompanying a visitor with a disability receives free General Admission during their visit. PCAs must identify themselves as a PCA at the 1st Floor Ticket Counter with the accompanied care recipient to receive free General Admission. Visitors with a PCA wishing to purchase tickets before their visit can call 412.237.3400.

PA ACCESS card holders, PA Medicaid recipients, and EBT card holders from any state are eligible for General Admission at $4 each for the cardholder and up to three additional people. 

Visitors must present their EBT card/ACCESS card/PA Medicaid card and matching photo ID at the 1st Floor Ticket Counter to receive the discount. 

Not valid with any other offer or group visit. Cardholder must be present.

For Visitors on the Autism Spectrum and/or with Sensory Sensitivity

Sensory backpacks (including a pair of noise-canceling headphones, gloves, sunglasses, fidget toys, and communication cards), weighted vests, blankets, and lap pads are available to borrow at no cost on a first-come, first-served basis. See a staff member at the 1st Floor Ticket Counter or in our theater spaces for availability.

During Sensory Sensitive Science Hours and Events, enjoy a self-guided visit including sensory-friendly demos and hands-on activities, with adjusted exhibit lights and sound effects throughout the museum.

For Visitors Who Are Blind or with Low Vision

Contact us at least two weeks in advance of your visit to see if sighted guides are available. Most of our exhibits are interactive, hands-on experiences. Please contact us at 412.237.3400 or Accessibilty@KaminScienceCenter.org to confirm availability.

For Visitors Who Are Deaf or Hard of Hearing

Contact us at least two weeks in advance of your visit to see if an American Sign Language interpreter is available. Closed captioning and assistive listening devices are available for most shows in the Rangos Giant Cinema. Service Animals

Service animals are welcome at the Science Center. Service animals are defined as any dog that is individually trained to do work or perform tasks for the benefit of an individual with a disability.

RAD Pass—Exploring Culture in Our Region

The RAD Pass provides Allegheny County library card holders ages 18 and up with access to free or discounted passes to local cultural attractions in our region. University and college students with a valid student ID receive $3 off General Admission for themselves. 

Students who attend the following schools receive free General Admission with a valid student ID and proof of active enrollment:

Community Access Memberships

Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh Community Access Memberships opens in a new window aim to expand access to all four Carnegie Museums by making Membership more accessible to all. We want more people to be able to afford and enjoy being part of our Member community. They apply to Kamin Science Center, Carnegie Museums of Art and Natural History, and the Andy Warhol Museum.

Free Teen Membership opens in a new window invites teens to experience all that our four museums have to offer, including new programming created just for them. We want young people to see themselves in our museums. Teens ages 13-18 now qualify to receive a free Teen Membership, which will remain active until they turn 19. Program is for PA residents only.

Family Access Memberships opens in a new window help remove financial barriers by offering full Family Membership benefits at the discounted price of $20 (compared to $160 for a regular Family Membership) to individuals and families who are eligible for public assistance. Program is for PA residents only.

The Organizational Outreach Membership opens in a new window invites eligible community-based nonprofits to share free, year-round museum access with the individuals and families they serve.

Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) Card Discount

Present your Electronic Benefit Transfer card (EBT card) from any state (for example, Pennsylvania ACCESS card, Ohio DIRECTION card, or West Virginia MOUNTAIN STATE card) and receive General Admission for up to four people for $4 each. 

Discount applies to the card issued by each state to administer government benefits payable to the cardholder. 

This discount does NOT apply to the Port Authority ACCESS card, and we do not accept the P-EBT card. 

Visitors must present their EBT card and matching photo ID to receive the discount.

Group Discounts

Looking to bring a group of 15 or more? Contact our Reservations Team at 412.237.3400 or visit the Group Visits page for more information on group visits.

Groups of 15 or more people over age 3, when they make advance reservations, pay just $10 per person Monday through Friday and $13 per person on Saturday and Sunday when they make reservations two weeks in advance of their requested visit date. Save on Space Travel

Visit Kamin Science Center and Moonshot Museum to save on General Admission.* Present your receipt or membership card from Moonshot Museum to receive $3 off Science Center admission. Receive $2 off admission to Moonshot Museum when you present a Kamin Science Center admission receipt or Carnegie Museums membership. Discount expires one month from the date on the receipt.

*Does not include admission to Rangos Giant Cinema, laser shows, or other programs. Discount is $3 off per ticket purchased on the receipt.

ASTC Travel Passport Program

Science museum discounts in Pittsburgh include the Association of Science and Technology Centers (ASTC) Travel Passport Program. This program entitles visitors to free General Admission for the equivalent of Kamin Science Center’s Family Membership (2 adults and 4 children up to age 18). 



The members listed on the reciprocal membership card must be present with their valid museum membership card and photo ID. Reciprocal science centers/museums must be located more than 90 miles from each other. To receive Travel Passport Program benefits, you must live more than 90 miles away from Kamin Science Center.  

Free General Admission does not include other paid experiences, including traveling exhibits, movies, laser shows, or special events.

Museum store discounts and other benefits associated with museum membership do not apply.

Half-Price Admission for Active Military

Active members of the United States military with a valid identification card receive half-price General Admission tickets for themselves and up to three others.

The Science Center will transform into a Halloween hub with a series of fun, hands-on activities for families along with after-hour frights for adults.

To celebrate, general admission visitors who dress in costume will receive a free small popcorn every weekend (Saturdays and Sundays) throughout the month of October.

The Great Pumpkin Smash Discount

On Sat., Nov. 1 from 10 a.m.–2 p.m., bring your leftover pumpkin for The Great Pumkin Smash at Kamin Science Center. Show us your carved pumpkin at the Ticket Counter to receive $5 off general admission. Then, head to our designated drop zone to smash your pumpkin!
