Kamin Science Center, formerly Carnegie Science Center, Group Pricing for Field Trips

Please note: Book at least two weeks in advance to secure the group rate. Group rates for the Pittsburgh science museum cannot be combined with Memberships or other discounts/coupons. Student prices apply to students only from grades pre-K through 12.

Group reservations are not available on any public holiday including the extended holiday weekend after Thanksgiving and the week between Christmas and New Year’s Day. The Science Center is regularly closed on days when there is an afternoon home Steelers game or other large events at Acrisure Stadium.

Scholarship Funding

Kamin Science Center is thankful for grants that support school field trips. To check if your school qualifies for scholarship funding and to register for a field trip, please call 412.237.3400.

Inspire the Next Generation of Scientists!

Do you work with 6th–8th grade students? The Lucchino Science Inspiration Fund is your chance to guide them to success at the 2026 Pittsburgh Regional Science & Engineering Fair – with full support from the Science Center.

Apply by Sept. 28 to join a cohort of passionate educators and receive:

  • $800 stipend upon completion
  • ACT 48 hours and professional development
  • One-on-one mentorship from our Science Fair team
  • Free parking, waived entry fees, and lunch at the Science Fair
  • Up to $150 in supply reimbursement per project

 

Your scholars will benefit from in-school support, hands-on guidance, and recognition for their achievements.

Priority given to schools with ≥40% free/reduced lunch.

Educators must attend four workshops (Oct. 2025–March 2026) and bring at least 10 scholars to the Fair on March 25, 2026.

PPG Scholarship Fund

​​Thanks to the generous support of PPG and the PPG Foundation, schools may be eligible for funding to cover free General Admission for field trips to Kamin Science Center.

FedEx Ground STEM Programming Scholarship Fund

With the generous support of FedEx Ground, schools may qualify for free admission to various STEM-focused educational events, including SciTech Days.

Bayer Fund Exploration Bundles

Thanks to a generous grant from the Bayer Fund, schools in Western Pennsylvania with a free and reduced lunch rate of 50% or higher may qualify for funding to support an on-site or off-site Science Center educational program.

Bosch Field Trip Resources Pilot Program

Through the generous support of Bosch, teachers at Title 1 schools may qualify for funding for free group admission to the Science Center and get exclusive access to Science Center–created resources.

Teacher Offers

We understand it can be challenging to explore everything Kamin Science Center has to offer with students in tow. If you’re a pre-K through grade 12 teacher from a school in Pennsylvania, Ohio, West Virginia, New York, or Maryland, you can use this opportunity to familiarize yourself with our exhibits and prepare for your upcoming field trip.

All you need to do is complete the registration form opens in a new window and bring your confirmation email and official school educator ID to the Science Center on the day of your visit.

Note: Special exhibitions, Rangos Giant Cinema films, laser shows, and other fee-based programs not included. Free visit cannot be used on the day of your field trip.

Ordering Ahead Makes Good Sense

For convenience, groups can preorder lunches and souvenir bags with ease. Groups of 15 or more can preorder boxed lunches from our RiverView Café through our on-site catering partner, Culinaire. With preordered lunches ready upon arrival, you can skip the hassle of packed meals and lines—all at a great price! Payment is due before your visit via one check or a single credit card (Visa, MasterCard, American Express, or Discover). A member of the Culinaire Catering Team will contact you about payment. Please note that all items are subject to a 7% sales tax. If your group is tax-exempt, proof of exemption is required. Payment for your group reservation is separate from your boxed lunch payment to Culinaire.

Preorder your boxed lunches at least two weeks before the day of your scheduled visit. Keep in mind you must make a group visit reservation before ordering boxed lunches.

Our boxed lunches can accommodate dietary restrictions. Please specify any needs (e.g., “five salads with no cheese”) on the online order form. To order, please contact Thomas Kvederis, director of catering, at 412.237.3422 or TKvederis@CIemail.com.

Kids’ Boxed Lunches $14 each, plus tax

Sandwich options: turkey, ham, roast beef, or peanut butter and jelly.
Lunches include a sandwich, side, cookie, and a beverage.

Adult Boxed Lunches $16 each, plus tax

Entrées include chicken breast, marinated sirloin, smoked turkey, Italian hoagie, wraps, and more.

Additional Options

Facing a long bus ride home? Purchase boxed lunches, snacks, or beverages for your group to enjoy on the way. These items will be available in the Group Services Lobby before your departure. Options include individually bagged chips, granola bars, whole fruit, and bottled water, juice, or tea. Inquire for additional items.

Reserve your field trip today using these easy steps.

Step 1: Explore the group admission offerings and available add-ons to determine your desired activities.

Step 2: Collect information:

  • Date of visit (please have two to three dates in mind)
  • Arrival and departure time
  • Estimated number of adults (include teachers and chaperones)
  • Estimated number of students
  • Lunch plans (times are assigned on the day of the visit)
  • Special needs

Step 3: Call us.

  • Our team will assist you in booking your visit and discuss educational anchors and standards related to our offerings.
  • We’ll schedule your show(s) and provide information for the day of your visit.
  • Please call 412.237.3400 to reserve your visit. Call Center hours: Monday–Friday from 9 a.m.–5 p.m. (year-round).

Good Things to Know

  • Minimum group size is 15 paid admissions. This includes children ages 3 and up, chaperones, and teachers.

Group Reservations Form

The Day of Your Visit

  • Check-In is located on the Ground Floor of the Science Center in the Group Services area.
  • Upon arrival (Monday through Friday) you will receive a short orientation.
  • If you are bringing in bag lunches, our staff will direct you to your storage space and provide you with a scheduled lunch time. 
  • If packing bag lunches, put them in boxes or coolers labeled with your group name. 
  • The storage area is not refrigerated, so please plan accordingly.

Where and How to Park

Parking for large school buses and coach buses is complimentary (subject to availability).

Bus parking maps opens in a new window are included in your confirmation. Please share this with your driver before your visit. Our Group Services staff will assist the driver with parking directions upon arrival.

Parking for passenger/school vans and personal vehicles is $6 per day.

If bringing a personal vehicle, please park in the Science Center lot before visiting the Group Services area.

Group Services and Check-In is located on the Ground Floor, directly under the main entrance. Buses with a maximum height of 12’ may drive up to Group Services Entrance for quick drop-off/pick-up.

Frequently Asked Field Trip Questions

Do I need a reservation to receive the group rates? 

Yes. The only way to receive the group rates is to call in advance and make a reservation. We recommend calling at least two weeks before your visit date. Groups who show up without a reservation will have to pay General Admission rates. 

Can I reserve my field trip online? 

Reservations are not available online, but feel free to complete our group reservations form opens in a new window to start the process. A team member will respond as soon as possible.

How many chaperones do I need?

Pre-K-Grade 1: 1 adult per 5 students 
Grades 2–12: 1 adult per 10 students 

Is there a dress code?

Kamin Science Center features activities and exhibits that involve some physical participation. We recommend wearing comfortable, casual clothing and sensible shoes. Wear some form of ID tag in the form of a sticker, label, T-shirt, or lanyard that identifies the name of your group. 

Can Membership cards be used for group visits?

Membership cards do not apply to group visits due to group discount rates. Members attending with a group will be charged the group rate to ensure participation in all reserved programs.

Can a lunch time be selected?

No, lunch times are not available in advance. All lunches for all groups are scheduled and assigned on the day of the visit. Our Group Services staff will provide your lunch time during your orientation.

Payment Questions

Purchase orders (POs) are not accepted.

Full payment is expected in one lump sum at check-in. Payments from individual students, parents, or families will not be accepted. The Science Center accepts cash (large bills preferred), a single check payable to Carnegie Institute, or major credit cards (Visa, MasterCard, or American Express). Advance payment can be made over the phone by credit card.

Groups who do not provide full payment at check-in will be charged an administrative fee of $15 for invoicing.

If your group falls below 15, you will be charged for a minimum of 15 people.

Carnegie Museums Memberships, coupons, or other discounts may not be used for or in conjunction with group visits.

The balance due for group visits is due on the day of the visit. Payment must be submitted in full and cannot be billed separately. 

We cannot send invoices for group visits; however, your visit contract contains all the information that you should need to request payment from your finance office.

If you have a premade check but your attendance has decreased (not below the minimum of 15 people), a refund can be provided through the cashier or a check may be sent to you. Allow 6-8 weeks for processing.

Kamin Science Center launched its Center for STEM Education and Career Development to ensure the upcoming generation understands the basics of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

By supporting what you’re teaching, our curriculum-aligned programming encourages students to let curiosity drive them, think critically, use teamwork, and creatively express their ideas. From school assemblies and field trips to career exploration programs and educator training workshops, we’re here to prepare the next generation of problem solvers, creative thinkers, and trailblazers for an ever-changing world.

STEM Education Resources

STEMisphere® opens in a new window is the online central hub listing STEM education resources for young people in pre-K–Grade 12 in the Southwestern Pennsylvania region. Kamin Science Center launched STEMisphere® to be a community resource for the Pittsburgh region, providing a directory of STEM programs, classes, events, and more. Support has been provided by the Legacy Alcoa Foundation, the Claude Worthington Benedum Foundation, The Grable Foundation, Shell, and Duquesne Light.

Educator Programs

PNC Grow Up Great with Science

Through a unique partnership with more than 150 regional preschool classrooms and PNC Grow Up Great with Science, Kamin Science Center has created comprehensive, teacher-tested STEM resources for early-learner educators. The Science Center has provided professional development and classroom resources to early-learner educators in Allegheny, Westmoreland, and Indiana Counties, as well as developed and delivered engaging family night events.

Based on the success of these programs, Kamin Science Center is engaged by the West Virginia Department of Education, with funding from the Benedum Foundation, to support its universal pre-K education programming.
