Quench your need for speed at Pittsburgh’s most visited museum, kid-free! Fuel up your Friday night with the thrill and science behind racing. Hit the track, test your speed, and learn what it takes to put the pedal to the metal.

  • Experience all five floors of the Science Center and enjoy special access to the Science of Speed, Powered by Lenovo, building with fellow 21+ racing fanatics!
  • Hit the multi-level, all-electric kart track in our new immersive experience, Science of Speed, with a separate ticket purchase.
  • Compete on legendary racetracks from around the world on our SimGear Simulator, included with admission.
  • Grab bites and enjoy delicious mocktails and non-alcoholic beers at the Pit Stop trackside lounge or at the satellite bars in the Science Center.
  • Grab a bite at RiverView Café, located on the ground floor of the Science Center.
  • Test your own speed through NFL Combine-inspired challenges in the Sports360 exhibit.
  • Get your wheels off the ground and take a detour into space with Buhl Planetarium shows at 6:30, 7:30, 8:30, and 9:30 p.m.
  • Sit down and buckle up for academic talks from automobile and engineering professionals.
    • At 7:30 p.m., Mike Maleki from Rosedale Tech will analyze the difference between go-karts and regular cars.
    • At 8:30 p.m., University of Pittsburgh’s Panther Racing will talk about what it takes to make a Formula racing car.
  • Take physics to the limit! Investigate forces and motion as we smash it, bash it, and crash it at 6:45 and 8:45 p.m. in the Science Stage.
  • Stop by the Main Lobby to see what the community is up to! Organizations include Rosedale Tech, the Riverhounds, Pitt Panther Racing, and Most Wanted Fine Arts Car Club.

Please note:

The Science of Speed building will only be open to those who have purchased a ticket for 21+ Night the evening of Fri., Aug. 28. Only 21+ Night visitors can purchase kart races, day-of and onsite, for $14 and Wave Italy F1 Simulator races, day-of and onsite, for$8.
Kart and Wave Italy F1 Simulator races will be sold on a first-come, first-served basis, and all visitors must check in at the Ticket Counter in the Science Center’s Main Lobby before purchasing tickets at Science of Speed. All races are limited to one per person.
Planning to race? Fill out your waiver now to save time! opens in a new window Even if you do not get to race at 21+ Night, the waiver will be valid for a full year so you can come back and race another time.
For the safety of all visitors, anyone participating in racing must not be under the influence of alcohol or other substances. Visitors who appear impaired will not be permitted to participate, so please refrain from consuming alcohol before racing. A variety of delicious mocktails and non-alcoholic beers are available in the Pit Stop trackside lounge, in Science of Speed.

21+ Night: Haunted Science Center

Kick off spooky season at Kamin Science Center! Gather your friends and explore supernatural science to find out if there really is proof of ghosts while drinking a spirit of your choice from one of our bars. Who knows, maybe you’ll change your mind about whether ghosts really exist!

  • Explore all five floors of the Science Center kid-free with exclusive cocktails and mocktails served at bars throughout the exhibit spaces.
  • Whether you have your Halloween costume done early or need to break out last year’s, make sure you come dressed to impress the lingering spirits!
  • Hear from real ghost hunters “Paranormal in Pennsylvania” as they discuss their most chilling first-hand experiences with the paranormal and breakdown the science behind all their devices. Talk begins at 7 p.m. in the Science Stage.
  • Enjoy the scares of yesteryear with a showing of the classic horror movie “Carnival of Souls” from 1962 presented by Steel City Horror Show’s Sean Collier. Presentation begins at 8 p.m. in the Science Stage. Doors will be kept open for fluid viewing.
  • Who ya gonna call? Steel City Ghostbusters! Check out all their cool paraphernalia including device recreations, their own Ectomobile parked out front, and perhaps an appearance or two from the movies’ iconic ghostly antagonists.
  • Delve deep into the night sky with a show at the Buhl Planetarium. Programming runs every half hour and includes our seasonal show “Guide to the Spooky Skies.” Hear about the mythological, and sometimes frightening, origins behind some constellations!
  • It’s alive! Explore Mary Shelley’s tale in our “Frankenscience” presentation and learn about science fiction that inspires science facts. Let us bring Frankenstein’s monster to life with millions of volts that will spark the imagination! Running twice during the event in our Works Theater.
  • Learn and play at the various activity stations dotted around the exhibits. Some of the activities featured include:
    • A scientific exploration of an Electromagnetic Field (EMF) Detector, a common ghost hunting device, and discover its helpful use outside of finding spirits.
    • Ever wonder how old movies and theme parks project ghosts? Look at the classic Pepper’s Ghost illusion and learn about parabolic mirrors.
    • See if you can communicate with ghosts using Dowsing Rods and learn what other scientific uses they have!
    • Make your own ghoul that moves on its own using the vibration of a small motor.
    • And more!

21+ Night: Monster Murder Mystery

At the Frankenstein wedding, one of the monstrous guests was murdered – and we need your help to solve this mystery! Use real forensic techniques to find the culprit while celebrating all things spooky season at Kamin Science Center. Come in costume and enjoy lots of treats!

  • Sip on some spooktacular themed cocktails!
  • Roam of all five floors of the museum kid-free!
  • Try out some forensic methods, like fiber analysis, toxicity, and fingerprinting.
  • Catch a Halloween-themed science show in one of our theaters!
  • Compare what you’ve seen on TV to real life Crime Scene Investigation (CSI) procedures with Dr. Lyndsie Ferrara of Duquesne University.
  • Learn about the origins of monster lore from Dr. Marcie Persyn of University of Pittsburgh.
  • Demo some horror games with local video game developer MegaCat Studios, known for “Five Nights at Freddy’s: Into the Pit!”
