Sensory Sensitive Science Hours and Events

Sensory Sensitive Science Hours and Events

Sensory Sensitive Science Hours are held on select Sunday mornings, and Sensory Sensitive 18+ Events are held on select days throughout the year.

Exhibit lights and sound effects are adjusted and special hands-on activities are added to foster a safe and welcoming environment for all visitors.

Whenever possible, low-sensory versions of shows and demonstrations are hosted by Buhl Planetarium, Live Demonstration Theaters, and other departments. Early entry is also offered on these days to provide reduced wait times and a calmer entry experience.

PRIDE and Chill: Sensory Friendly
Adult Night

Sun., June 28
6-9 p.m.

Adults ages 18 and over are invited to explore Kamin Science Center in a low-stimulus, child-free environment. This evening is for adults who might get overwhelmed by crowds or loud soundscapes; for people with or without disabilities, including anyone who would simply enjoy a more relaxed museum visit.

Feeling proud…but maybe not loud? Noisy parades and packed events can be overwhelming. Join us for a mellow evening in celebration of Autistic-, Disability-, and LGBTQ+ Pride. You bring the rainbows – we’ll provide the fidgets!

  • Enjoy all five floors of the museum at your own pace with venue adaptations: exhibit expectation signs and modifications, adjusted lighting, and reduced or eliminated audio/visual effects.
  • Get up close with the far reaches of space at Buhl Planetarium’s “Touch the Stars,” a new, tactile/sensory accessible show.
  • Experience a low-stimulus version of “High Voltage,” one of our iconic Demonstration Theater programs.
  • Hear from a special guest about their experience as an autistic, disabled, LGBTQ+ person working for a large, government-run scientific agency.
  • Explore exhibits such as the Miniature Railroad and Village®, Mars: The Next Giant Leap®, Sports360, BodyWorks, SpacePlace, and more!
