Sensory sensitive hours are held on select days throughout the year and include Sunday morning family-friendly Sensory Sensitive Science Hours, and periodic sensory-friendly 18+ Nights.
While sensory events are inclusive and open to all, they are tailored to create a safe, welcoming, and accessible environment for those who would be most comfortable with a more relaxed museum experience. These programs offer early entry and/or reduced event capacity, which means reduced crowds and wait-times, venue/exhibit adjustments, and a mellow museum soundscape. Sensory sensitive programming is thoughtfully designed for children, teens, adults (and families/caregivers) who are autistic/neurodiverse; visitors with cognitive, developmental, or physical disabilities; and anyone with sensory sensitivities.
Venue adaptations during sensory programs include reduced lighting, adjusted or eliminated sound effects, and added expectations signs on certain exhibits. Trained staff and volunteers run accessible hands-on activities and demonstrations. Show formats are modified to offer flexible, lower-sensory experiences inside Buhl Planetarium, Demonstration Theaters, Animal Habitats, and more!
A quiet “take a break” space with fidget toys, beanbag chairs, calm music, and low lighting is available during sensory sensitive events. Sensory backpacks and noise-cancelling headphones are available to anyone during both regular business hours and sensory sensitive events. Backpacks can be borrowed from the 1st Floor Ticket Counter in the Main Lobby, free of charge, for the duration of your museum visit.
