Tour Your Future

Guided career exploration for teens to connect with diverse STEM professionals.

Tour Your Future offers an exciting opportunity for youth ages 11–17 to connect with STEM professionals and get an insider’s look at their workplaces. Participants will tour organizations such as Pittsburgh Institute of Aeronautics, Pittsburgh Zoo & Aquarium, University of Pittsburgh, and more, experiencing firsthand what it’s like to work in various STEM fields.

All youth, ages 11–17, are welcome to attend this guided career exploration. Pre-registration is required. Register online for available tours using the links below or call 412.237.3400.

Cook MyoSite is a life science company with a focus on regenerative medicine. Our mission is to make regenerative medicine a part of everyday medicine, and our vision is to be the most trusted name in muscle cell technology. Cook MyoSite is currently pursuing FDA approval for iltamiocel, our muscle cell technology, and to date our clinical programs have enrolled more than 700 participants. During their visit to Cook MyoSite’s laboratory facilities, students will get to tour an active aseptic biologics manufacturing laboratory and get to meet current life sciences professionals.

CMU Materials Science and Engineering

During this visit, students will get a glimpse into the fascinating field of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) through an interactive demonstration of metal heat treatment and strength/fracture surface characterization. Students will get to meet a few graduate students, see some of the Carnegie Mellon MSE lab spaces/equipment, help treat and break metals, and look at broken samples under an electron microscope! Because we will be working in lab spaces, we require participants to wear long pants, closed-toe shoes, and have long hair tied back for this event.

Chemistry is hiding in plain sight all around you. Chemical laboratory technicians do the invisible work of inventing and improving the things you use every day, from cars and paints to cushions and sidewalks, right here in Pittsburgh. Learn how you can become a Chemical Laboratory Technician at Bidwell Training Center through a morning of hands-on experiments in our fully equipped, working chemistry lab. Bidwell Training Center provides no-cost technical training for Pennsylvania adults in fields such as chemistry, healthcare, culinary arts, and horticulture. To participate in the lab activity, students must wear full-length pants, fully enclosed shoes (sneakers are fine), and pull their hair back.

Come to a day of aviation education exploration! You will get a behind-the-scenes look at how an airport operates and meet professionals from different fields, like pilots, air traffic controllers, airport manager, fire safety personnel, and aircraft technicians. You will hear from individuals sharing what their job involves, how they got started, and what they love most about working in aviation. You will get to tour of a hangar and see students learning about the aviation maintenance field. It will be a full day of discovery to many exciting career paths in aviation and inspiration for anyone interested in the skies!

Have you ever wondered what it takes to become a teacher, principal, or educational leader? Join us at Point Park University’s School of Education to explore the exciting world of education and discover how educators make a difference in the lives of students every day. During this interactive visit, students will learn about careers in education, explore a college campus in the heart of downtown Pittsburgh, and meet current college students and faculty members. Participants will take part in hands-on activities that highlight how teachers design engaging lessons, using creativity to support learning, and solve real-world challenges in today’s classrooms. Students will tour key campus locations, hear about the college experience, learn about various career pathways in education, and gain insight into how educators help shape future generations. Whether you are interested in teaching, coaching, leadership, working with children, or simply curious about college life, this visit will provide an inside look at the opportunities available in the field of education and beyond.

VISTRA Corp – Beaver Valley Power Station

The group will meet members of the Beaver Valley Chapter of U.S. Women in Nuclear (USWIN), as well as, members of our Training Department. The students will spend some time in our Control Room Simulator. They will be able to witness simulated Control Room situations and manipulate controls in a simulator like our Operators do in the real Plant Control Room. The students will have the opportunity to visit a classroom and have a brief discussion with some of the employees here at the station to learn about different professions within the nuclear industry.

Can I go on a tour? Tours are open to individuals and groups ages 11–17. Pre-registration is required. Since capacity is very limited, please ensure you can attend before registering.

What will I do on a tour? Typical tours include a guided tour of the host site’s facility, a Q&A session with STEM professionals, and a hands-on activity related to the work done at the host site.

How much does a tour cost? All tours are $13 per student. A limited number of need-based scholarships for individuals and groups are available. What if the tour is filled? If the tour you’re interested in is filled, please call 412.237.3400 to be added to the waitlist. You will be notified if spaces become available.

Where do I go for the tour? All tours are on-site at the specified locations, or on a virtual meeting platform. These are NOT at Kamin Science Center. After registration is complete, you will receive an informational email approximately one week before the tour date with specific arrival and tourdetails.

Tour Your Future No-Call No-Show Policy

Participants must cancel their spot at least one week in advance if they are unable to attend. If any participant is a no-call no-show two times during a semester, that participant will be unable to register for future tours.
